MARYLAND DISTRICT 5 ISSUES
Education
As we navigate this changing global landscape, it remains true that a quality education is still one of the most essential tools needed to succeed in life.
We need to ensure that our schools are adequately funded with the resources our children need to learn and grow. We also need to invest in our teachers, who are the backbone of our education system. By providing them with the support they need, we can ensure that they will be able to provide our students with the best possible education.
Next, I support an increased investment in STEM education, focusing on high-quality Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math programs in our public schools and beyond. Parents need to have a say in their childrens’ education, and parents overwhelmingly support preparing their children for the science and technology jobs of the future.
Preparing for the future also does not prevent us from acknowledging the economic realities of the present. For students who want to gain the skills and knowledge needed to enter the workforce quickly, we should promote trade schools and certificate programs as an avenue to job security.
Finally, in response to the episodes of violence that we have seen in schools across the country, we need to ensure that our students are safe and secure while they are on school grounds. I support increasing, and diversifying, school security measures such as metal detectors, security cameras, and in some cases, trained security personnel.
